What information does Google use to match your image?

How does metadata and image fingerprint stripping work?

Second, the colour channels in the image are subtly shifted. Third, the image edges are cropped slightly. Search engines use edge and composition data to match images; a small crop breaks that match without obviously altering the composition. Fourth, a tiled watermark is applied across the entire image. The watermark isn’t meant to be intrusive — it’s typically subtle and repeating — but it disrupts the texture and colour distribution that algorithms rely on. Together, these four techniques render the image’s fingerprint sufficiently different that it no longer matches the source when run through Google Lens or TinEye.
Does processing your images in the browser keep them private?
Yes. The image protection process happens entirely within your browser using the Canvas API — a standard web technology that lets browsers manipulate image data locally. When you upload an image to protect it, that image never leaves your device. It is not sent to a cloud server, stored in a database or analysed by third parties. The browser applies the metadata stripping, colour shifts, crops and watermark, then you download the protected version. Your original image remains with you.
This matters to designers and architects who work with client-confidential projects, unreleased products or sensitive specifications. There is no upload, no storage, no risk of your mood boards or renders being archived, indexed or sold. The only data that leaves your browser is the protected image file itself, which you then share with your client as normal.
What limitations should you know about?
Image protection is not a legal remedy and does not constitute copyright registration or provide enforceable ownership rights. If someone copies your mood board and resells it, protection software will not give you a claim in court. What it does do is make the image technically harder to trace backwards through search engines — it is a practical barrier, not a legal one.
Protection also works against current versions of Google Lens and TinEye. Future versions of these tools may use different matching algorithms, and no technique can guarantee protection against all possible future methods. The metadata stripping, colour shifting, cropping and watermarking defeat the fingerprint-matching approach that these tools currently use. As long as that approach remains dominant, protection remains effective.
Finally, the visual quality of your protected image remains high enough for client presentations. The watermark is subtle and repeating; colour shifts are imperceptible to the human eye; the crop is minimal. A protected mood board looks professional and unchanged to anyone viewing it. The alterations are designed to fool algorithms, not to mark the image visibly as protected.
When should you protect your design images?
Protect any mood board, render or specification image before sharing it with a client for the first time. This is especially important if the image contains curated product selections, bespoke colour palettes, or commissioned illustration work. Protect concept renders and preliminary sketches that reveal your creative process or aesthetic direction. Protect lookbooks, style guides and visual proposals that are part of your intellectual capital.
You do not need to protect every screenshot or stock image you reference internally. Focus on finished, curated work — the pieces that represent your expertise and taste. Once an image is protected, you can share it freely with clients, colleagues and prospects without worrying about reverse-image searches revealing your sources or allowing clients to bypass you.
