What is reverse image lookup and how does it work?

Reverse image lookup is a search method that takes an image as input rather than text. Google Lens, TinEye and similar tools analyse the image’s digital fingerprint—a mathematical representation of its pixels, metadata (camera settings, creation date, location tags), colour channels and dimensions. The tool then compares that fingerprint against billions of indexed images online to find matches, near-duplicates or visually similar versions.
