This happens because mood boards are often composed of real products—textiles, furniture, finishes, lighting. The supplier’s own images, product pages and catalogues are indexed by search engines and reverse-image databases. A single recognisable product in your mood board—even cropped or photographed at an angle—can be enough for the algorithm to surface the supplier. The client then sees the price, lead time and availability, and makes their own decision without your input.
How does reverse-image search actually match images to sources?
Search algorithms do not compare images pixel-for-pixel. Instead, they extract a ‘fingerprint’—a mathematical summary of the image’s content. This process is robust. The algorithm can match images that have been slightly cropped, rotated, or compressed. It can also match images across different formats and sizes. Once an image enters the indexed database—through your client’s screenshot, a shared link, or a social media post—it becomes searchable, and the supplier becomes visible.
How does image protection alter the fingerprint so reverse search fails?
Image protection tools work by modifying the digital fingerprint before the image is exposed or shared. The result is an image that looks identical to the human eye but produces a completely different fingerprint. When a client screenshots the protected mood board and attempts to reverse-search it, Google Lens and TinEye report no match or only very distant matches. The original supplier is no longer findable through reverse search. The image remains usable for your client and your own internal work; the protection is invisible and does not affect how the mood board communicates the design intent.
Is the protection private? Where is my image processed?
Yes. Every image is processed entirely in your browser using the Canvas API, a standard web technology that manipulates image data locally on your device. What kinds of images should you protect, and when?
Protect any mood board, concept image, or visual reference that you share with clients, especially before you have finalised the scheme or secured the commission. Interior design mood boards composed of real products are the highest priority: these are most vulnerable to reverse search because the products themselves are indexed and findable. Mood boards sent via email, shared in a presentation, or displayed on a screen that a client can photograph should all be protected before sharing. Protect images before they are exposed; protection after an image has already been widely shared or indexed by search engines will not remove it from existing databases.
You should also consider protecting early-stage concept boards, material samples, and colour palettes if they include recognisable products or suppliers. What doesn’t image protection do, and what are its limits?
Image protection makes reverse-image search fail; it does not provide legal copyright protection, copyright registration, or a guarantee against all future forms of image theft or copying. It does not prevent a determined client from manually searching for products they see in your mood board, taking notes, or asking suppliers directly about materials. It does not stop someone from downloading the protected image and attempting to reverse-search the original unprotected version if they have access to it. And it cannot defeat every possible future version of reverse-image search technology—search algorithms evolve, and protection must evolve with them.
What it does do is close the easy path. Most clients do not manually research every product in a mood board; they use reverse search as a convenient shortcut. By making that shortcut fail, you reclaim the conversation and the opportunity to guide the client toward choices that suit the brief, the budget, and the timeline.
