Reverse-image search engines like Google Lens and TinEye let anyone upload a photo to find identical or visually similar images across the web. For interior designers and architects, this means clients can photograph your mood boards, search them, and contact suppliers directly—bypassing your commission entirely. You need to understand how the technology works to protect your work.
What reverse-image search actually does
Reverse-image search works by converting a photograph into a mathematical fingerprint. Google Lens, TinEye and similar tools analyse the image’s visual features—colours, shapes, edges, texture patterns—and create a unique numerical signature. That signature is then compared against billions of indexed images in the search engine’s database. When the fingerprints match closely enough, the engine flags the image as visually identical or similar.
The fingerprint includes metadata too: the image filename, creation date, camera model, GPS coordinates if embedded, and any stored author information. Some search engines exploit this metadata to rank matches more confidently. This means a simple photograph of your mood board—even if your client only shows it on their phone—carries a trail of identifying information that makes it easy to trace back to the original source or to find identical product listings elsewhere.
For specifiers and designers, this is the weak point. A client takes a photo of your carefully curated mood board at a presentation. They run it through Google Lens. Why standard image formats are vulnerable
When you export an image from a design tool or phone camera, the file retains layers of traceable information. A JPG or PNG contains not just the visual data but embedded metadata: your device details, the timestamp, sometimes location data. This metadata acts as an anchor point for reverse-image search. Even if someone crops or slightly resizes your image, the core fingerprint often survives because the pixel data remains fundamentally unchanged.
The visual fingerprint itself is remarkably resilient. Small crops, modest brightness shifts, or minor compression artefacts do not destroy the match. How image transformation defeats reverse-image search

Choosing when to protect your images
Not every image needs protection.
