Why reverse-image search is a real risk for design studios
Interior designers, architects and specifiers routinely build mood boards from publicly available photography, fabric samples, product shots and styling images. These boards are genuine creative tools—they show clients the direction, mood and material palette of a proposed scheme. The problem: a client with a smartphone can photograph your board or take a screenshot, then drop that image into Google Lens or TinEye. Seconds later, the tool identifies the original source: the fabric manufacturer, the furniture supplier, the wall finish maker. The client now has the product name, the stockist, and often the price. The design fee and the relationship vanish.

What reverse-image-search engines actually look for
Google Lens, TinEye and similar tools don't read the visual content the way a human does. Instead, they generate a digital fingerprint of an image—a mathematical summary of its pixel patterns, colours, edges and structure. This fingerprint is compared against billions of indexed images. When a match is found, the tool returns the original source, the date it was first published, and where else it appears online.
The fingerprint is robust. It can survive minor crops, slight colour shifts and moderate compression. But it's not unbreakable. If you change enough of the image's mathematical properties—remove the identifying metadata that cameras and design tools embed, alter the colour channels, crop the edges unpredictably, overlay a watermark—the fingerprint no longer matches the original. The engine performs a search and finds nothing. Your mood board remains private.
How NoScrape modifies images to defeat reverse-image matching
NoScrape applies four complementary techniques to each image, all processed in your browser without uploading anything to the cloud. First, it strips EXIF and other embedded metadata—the shooting data, camera model, GPS location and other tags that cameras and software automatically attach. Metadata alone won't stop a sophisticated reverse search, but removing it eliminates one identifier. Second, NoScrape crops a variable border from each edge of the image. This breaks the fingerprint because reverse-search algorithms anchor their matching to edge detection and boundary patterns. A 10–20 pixel crop from random edges is enough to disrupt this anchoring.
Third, NoScrape shifts the colour channels—mathematically adjusting the red, green and blue values of the image in a subtle but systematic way. The image still looks nearly identical to the human eye, but the colour fingerprint no longer matches the original. Finally, NoScrape tiles a watermark across the image. This adds a new layer of visual data that the algorithm must account for, further degrading the match confidence. Together, these four modifications—metadata removal, edge crop, colour shift and watermark—render the image unmatchable by current reverse-search engines. The image is still usable in your presentation to clients. It simply no longer points back to the source when run through Google Lens or TinEye.
Privacy: why processing happens on your device, not the cloud
NoScrape uses the Canvas API, a browser-based technology that allows images to be read, modified and saved locally on your computer or device. No image file is ever uploaded to NoScrape's servers or any third-party service. Your mood boards never leave your machine. This matters for two reasons: speed and confidentiality. The modification is instant—you don't wait for a round trip to the internet. And your client work remains yours. No image is logged, indexed, cached or analysed by NoScrape or any external party. The only record of the processed image is the file you choose to save and use in your presentation.
This local processing also means you retain full control. You can batch-process dozens of images, preview them, adjust the watermark text or positioning, and export them all before showing them to a client. There's no quota, no account needed, no tracking of what you protect. You simply use the tool and move on.
What NoScrape does and doesn't guarantee
It's important to be clear about what image protection achieves and what it doesn't. NoScrape makes reverse-image-search matching fail. This is a mathematical fact: if the fingerprint no longer aligns with the source image in Google's or TinEye's index, the search returns no match. However, this is not a legal protection. If a client physically copies your mood board and republishes it under their own name, that's copyright infringement—and you'd need copyright law and potentially litigation to address it. NoScrape prevents the convenience shortcut; it doesn't create a legal remedy.
Equally, this protection applies to the tools that exist today. Future versions of Google Lens or TinEye might evolve their algorithms to be more robust against these modifications. But current versions—and the tools most clients and suppliers actually use—rely on the fingerprint mechanisms that NoScrape disrupts. The protection is effective now and remains so as long as these tools work the way they currently do.
When and how to use image protection in your workflow
Image protection is most effective when used systematically. Create two versions of every mood board: an internal version with unmodified images, which you keep for your records and future reference, and a client-facing version with NoScrape-protected images. This takes minutes to do—batch process all your images at once, then build the presentation deck as normal. The protected images look almost identical to the originals; the difference is invisible in a 200-pixel-wide mood board frame, but it renders the image unsearchable.
The other point to protect is individual product shots or detail images you're sharing via email, document or website. If a client receives a protected JPEG of a specific fabric or finish, they can't reverse-search it. They can still describe it to you or ask you for the product name—and you can then discuss specification, alternatives and cost. You've kept the conversation between you and the client, rather than allowing them to bypass you entirely.
