What does an image compressor actually do—and will it stop clients stealing your mood boards?

An image compressor reduces file size by removing data from the image file itself. For design studios, though, smaller files alone don't stop reverse-image-search theft. What is image compression and why does file size matter?

Image compression reduces file size by discarding data. A high-resolution mood board—say, 3000 × 2000 pixels at 300 DPI—might be 15–25 MB uncompressed. A compressor can cut that to 2–4 MB, which speeds up email, reduces storage costs and makes sharing faster.

For interior designers and architects sharing client work, smaller files are genuinely useful. They load faster on shared drives, fit easily in email attachments, and reduce the bandwidth cost of cloud storage. But here’s the critical point: compressing a JPEG or PNG does not change how Google Lens or TinEye recognise the image. Both tools match images using perceptual hashing—a fingerprint based on the image’s visual structure, not its file size. Why compression alone doesn’t stop reverse-image search

Reverse-image-search engines use perceptual fingerprinting. They analyse the image’s colour distribution, edges, patterns and structure—not metadata or file size. How actual image protection defeats Google Lens and TinEye

When all four operations are applied together, the result is an image that looks almost identical to the original in a mood board or presentation, but is effectively invisible to Google Lens and TinEye.

In practice, both can be relevant. You might compress a high-resolution source image to 4–5 MB for easier handling, then apply protection layers before sharing it externally. The two aren’t mutually exclusive—they serve different purposes. Compression is about efficiency; protection is about control.

For specifiers and designers, the decision is straightforward: if a mood board or reference image is part of your intellectual work or your competitive advantage, protect it. If it’s an internal asset or a low-sensitivity reference, compression alone is fine.

What to check before choosing a tool

If you choose a tool that includes protection functionality (rather than just compression), verify that processing happens in the browser, not on remote servers. This matters because your images are commercially sensitive—they often contain client budgets, procurement chains, or specification decisions. It makes casual theft much harder and removes the path-of-least-resistance for clients to find your suppliers without going through you.

It also won’t protect against future versions of image-recognition technology. Google Lens and other tools evolve. Even if search engines become more advanced, they’ll still need to match visual patterns. Significant colour shifts, crops and watermarks will remain disruptive.

Think of protection as a practical business tool, not an insurance policy. It stops the routine theft that erodes your margin.
