Why standard image compression fails to protect mood boards
When you export a mood board as JPEG or PNG, the image file carries embedded metadata: creation date, camera settings, location data and the original filename. More importantly, the pixel data itself creates a unique fingerprint. Reverse-image-search engines like Google Lens and TinEye use this fingerprint to match your mood board to the original supplier images it contains. Compressing file size doesn’t erase that fingerprint—it only makes the file smaller. A client can still upload your compressed mood board and find every sofa, fabric and accent piece you sourced.
Interior designers, architects and specifiers lose commissions this way. A client sees your curated palette, sourcing and styling, runs it through Google Lens, discovers the products cost less bought direct from manufacturers, and the supplier relationship you’ve built becomes irrelevant. Standard compression doesn’t address the underlying problem: the image fingerprint remains intact and searchable.
How metadata removal and pixel transformation actually break reverse-image matching
NoScrape works by modifying the image itself in ways that preserve its visual usefulness to you but destroy its value to reverse-image engines. The tool strips all EXIF and IPTC metadata—the hidden technical data that identifies the image origin. It then crops a thin edge from the image to alter the pixel dimensions slightly. It shifts the colour channels (red, green and blue) by minute amounts, imperceptible to the human eye but enough to change the mathematical fingerprint. Finally, it applies a tiled watermark across the entire image.
Together, these changes mean the pixel data no longer matches the source images in the reverse-image database. Google Lens cannot match it. TinEye cannot match it. A client who uploads your modified mood board will see no results—or results unrelated to your sourcing. Your mood board remains visually identical to you and your client, but it is no longer a vector for supplier discovery. The image stays in your browser throughout; nothing is uploaded to any server.
What happens to your image when you use browser-based processing

Speed and privacy compound the practical value, especially for studios managing dozens of mood boards per month.
When to protect a mood board and what your clients need to know
You should protect a mood board before you send it to a client. Protect it before you upload it to a shared drive or email it. Protect the version that will exist outside your direct control. A mood board used only in in-person studio presentations or printed as a physical document doesn’t need protection—physical goods can’t be reverse-image-searched. Digital mood boards shared with clients, consultants or stakeholders are the risk point.
Your clients don’t need to know the technical details. They will see that the mood board is watermarked and ask why. Tell them plainly: the watermark protects your sourcing expertise and ensures they work with you and your relationships rather than going direct to manufacturers. A good client understands that your value is partly in the curation, the palette logic and the supplier relationships you’ve built. Protecting the mood board signals confidence in that value. It also signals that you take your work seriously enough to safeguard it.
What reverse-image protection cannot do
NoScrape makes reverse-image matching fail. It does not provide legal copyright protection, nor does it register your copyright with any authority. It is not a legal remedy if a client or competitor deliberately copies your scheme. If someone wants to steal your idea badly enough, they can screenshot the mood board, manually recreate the scheme or hire someone to identify each product by eye. Protection tools raise the cost and friction of copying, but they don’t eliminate determined theft.
This tool also cannot account for future versions of reverse-image technology. Google Lens and TinEye may evolve their matching algorithms in ways that bypass pixel-level alterations. For now, the metadata removal, cropping, colour shift and watermark are effective. As a user, you should assume the protection works today and may need refreshing in future. The best protection is still the oldest one: deliver such compelling work that the client values your relationship more than the cost of sourcing independently.
How to build a mood-board protection workflow
Protect at export time. When you finish a mood board in your design tool, export it in a standard format (JPEG or PNG), then run it through NoScrape before you hand it to anyone. Add it to your standard handover checklist, alongside PDFs and specifications. If you work with junior designers or contractors, brief them to protect all client-facing mood boards by default.
Consider a naming convention so you can track which versions are protected. You might label the protected file ‘_protected’ or ‘_final_client’ to distinguish it from your internal, unprotected working copies. Keep your raw, unprotected mood boards in your own project archive for future revisions or client amendments. Protect only the versions that leave your studio.
