How does Google picture reverse search work, and why should interior designers and architects care?

Google Picture Reverse Search (via Google Lens and similar tools like TinEye) scans an image’s visual fingerprint — a digital signature based on colour, composition and metadata — to find identical or near-identical images online. For interior designers and architects, this means clients can photograph your mood boards and go direct to suppliers, bypassing your practice entirely. What exactly is reverse-image search and how does it match images?

Reverse-image search works by converting an image into a mathematical fingerprint — a pattern based on pixel colour distribution, edges, shapes and metadata (EXIF data, file name, creation date). When you upload an image to Google Lens or TinEye, the service compares that fingerprint against billions of indexed images online.
