How to find an image in Google—and why your mood boards need protection

Why do designers lose commissions when clients reverse-search mood boards?

When should you protect your mood boards?

Protect images that are commercially sensitive or that form the intellectual core of your specification work. Mood boards shared with clients, concept presentations, and curated collections of finishes and furniture are obvious candidates. These images represent your design thinking and your source intelligence; protecting them keeps the relationship and the commission with you.

You should also consider protection for images that contain original photography, custom styling or layouts that you’ve created. A mood board composed entirely of generic stock images is less at risk of being reverse-searched (because stock images are designed to be widely distributed), but a mood board built from niche supplier imagery, professional photography or your own work is a high-value target for reverse-image search.

Conversely, images intended for public portfolio work, website features or published case studies can remain unprotected if you’re happy for the work to be visible and the sources to be discoverable. The choice depends on whether the image serves a commercial brief (where protection makes sense) or a reputational one (where visibility often matters more).

How do you actually protect and share images with clients?
